ABOUT THE CAMPOUT
For our April campout we will be camping at Standing Indian, a beautiful area, bordering a lot of scenic trails and the Appalacian Trail. We will have two different groups on the campout.
Basecamp: This group is for our newest First Year Scouts (i.e., rising 6th graders) and most of our Second Year Scouts (i.e., rising 7th graders) plus any other older Scouts interested in this program. The First Year Scouts will work on basic camping and scout skills, rank advancement, etc. and will sleep in tents. For any other Scouts in this group, you will work on basic survival skills, including building shelters, advancement, and assisting in teaching First Year Scouts. This group will have the option of sleeping under the shelter they build or in their tent (all Scouts in this group will put up a tent regardless of whether they sleep in it or not).
Survivalists: For Scouts First Class and above (including 2nd Year Scouts) OR Tenderfoot or Second Class Scouts that are rising 8th graders who obtain permission from Mr. Cole (ctcole0308@gmail.com). This group will stay away camp along the trail, working on various survival skills, including building their own shelters that they will sleep under. These Scouts do not need to bring a tent for Saturday night. Depending on adult support, Scouts in the Survivalist group will have the opportunity to work on the Wilderness Survival merit badge. If you do not have Wilderness Survival Merit Badge, then sign-up for it when you register for the campout, and we hope to have breakout sessions at upcoming meetings to assist you in completing this merit badge.
Notes:
Parents: we will need a lot of adult participation to transport Scouts and have solid coverage for these various groups and crews. Come join us and have a great time with us at Standing Indian! If we don't have enough adult coverage the campout location will change to one closer to Atlanta and the program may be reduced or changed.
All Scouts will utilize tarps and rope in the construction of their shelters.
Food/Cooking: Based on the number of Scouts that sign-up for each group, etc., the Senior Patrol Leader and Adults will coordinate meal planning activities. We will continue to use patrol-method food preparation, but your patrol will be created specifically for this trip so we ask everyone to remain open and flexible as we start the sign-up and work our way through this process.
Deadline - Two weeks prior to the campout
All medical forms must be turned in
All adult training must be done
If these things are not completed two weeks prior to the campout (April 10) the participate will not go.

PACKING LIST
See the Gear webpage for the general packing list.
Remember, all Scouts need to arrange who they are tenting with and who is bringing the tent!
Survivalist Scouts
Pack your normal (minimal) gear in a backpack. Your 10 essentials should be in your backpack . . . not in a seperate day pack.
Have a tent in a vehicle as a backup in case of bad weather, but do not pack a tent for the trail. In case of bad weather you and a buddy(ies) should have a tent plan. Who is bringing the tent and who would stay in the tent in case of bad weather? These tents will remain in a vehicle in case they are needed.
Basecampers: Ensure you have your daypack with the 10 essentials
Bring money for lunch on Sunday afternoon.
Remember to be ready for wet and cold weather! All Scouts and families should review this list when packing.
Prescription Medication?
If your scout will be taking medications during the weekend, please have your Scout turn it in when assembling Satuday morning to the medical officer (Paul Mooring)
Complete this Medication Administration Form
NO prescription, over the counter medicine, vitamins or herbal supplements are permitted in a scout’s gear.
The Scout’s medication, along with the completed form should be placed in a Ziplock bag.
Medications MUST BE in their ORIGINAL containers. We will be unable to accept anything without the original container.
Please label the Ziplock bag with your Scout’s name.
Emergency medications such as Epi-pen and albuterol inhalers should be kept with the Scout at all times!!!!!

Standing Indian is at Latitude 35° 4' 43.0000" N 83° 31' 54.9998" W
Spend some time to know how you will get to Standing Indian Campground. You do not want to go the dark, spooky, and poorly marked road way!! Avoid State Road 83.
Directions: Take Highway 23 all the way almost into Franklin, turn on 64, and then head back south to the turn for Standing Indian Campground. It’s two minutes longer but lighted and easy to follow. The trick is you have to “add a stop” at Sloan Road and Murphy Road [which is 64] in NC when you map it (see the map below). If you add Franklin, it will take you too far north and then cut you back, so you have to add an intersection with a road that crosses 64 past the turn off, and I found that Sloan Road worked and it is still in my phone.
Consider a cartop carrier, depending on number of passengers and gear anticipated
There is no parking fee at Standing Indian for us
We are in Campsites B and C
When to wear class A uniform
Scouts and adult leaders will wear Class A shirts at the following times:
Enroute to Standing Indian (we always travel in uniform). Upon arrival they can be left in a vehicle or tent.
For Scouts Own Service
Sunday, Enroute from Standing Indian, back =
Sunday Return to OGUMC
Scouts plan to depart Standing Indian around 10:00 a.m. After stopping for lunch, the estimated time to arrive at OGUMC is 2:00 p.m. All Scouts will need to be present for roll call and to help unload the trailer before being dismissed.
