Campout Description
The Chattooga River is the crown jewel of southern whitewater and will be a new rafting experience for most of us. Famous as the location for the movie Deliverance, this wild and scenic river will give us an unforgettable day of rafting. The section of river we will raft has rapids ranging from class I to class III, with the option for some of our participants to run the infamous Bull Sluice, a class IV drop. The day of rafting will be 6-7 hours with a professional guide in each raft and include lunch on the river. We will camp on Friday and Saturday nights at Camp Rainey Mountain. Camping both nights is required to participate in this trip.
Please Note: ALL SCOUTS RAFTING WITH THE TROOP MUST BE “SWIMMERS” and have passed the BSA swim test (within the past 12 mos.) Swim tests can be arranged for those who have not passed the BSA swim test. Non-swimmers will not be eligible for this trip.
There are Class I, II, and III rapids that everyone will get to raft. The Class IV rapid, known as Bull Sluice, will not be available for First Year Scouts and those who weigh less than 85 pounds. Everyone else will have the option to run the Class IV rapid or walk around the rapid and meet the boats after Bull Sluice. On the rafting day, the adult leadership will have the option of further restricting those who can run Bull Sluice, the Class IV rapid.
All Scouts are age-eligible to raft this section of the Chattooga (8 years old is the minimum)
Rafting Priority: With 60 rafting spots reserved, we anticipate having enough spots for all T77 Scouts and adults who want to go. However, the following priorities will guide us if we have more people register than we have available rafting spots. Scouts will have the first priority for rafting spots. The next priority for rafting will be given to adults who have a position of responsibility (POR) in the Troop. The next priority group is parents who do not have a POR but have actively been involved in the last year (e.g. participating in campouts). Finally, the remaining spots will be based on the signup order.
Review all our campout guidelines here to ensure you know about expectations regarding medical forms, adult training, cancellations, refunds, and the requirement that Scouts participate fully in the campout, unless approved by the Scoutmaster.
Medical Forms and Adult training (YPT and Haz Weather) are due when registration closes. Work on them now!
